A Sour is a family of drinks, but not the mood that you get put in when you have one. Thusly named for the featured citrus, Sours are dynamic, complex, layered drinks that lend themselves well to be shaken hard and poured over ice, all in the name of cutting the sour flavor of the citrus, be it the traditional lemon or lime, or something a bit different, like grapefruit or rangpur. The bottom line is the sours are great drinks for any time of year, though they are often identified as summer drinks. You’ve just got to put a seasonal spin on yours.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

* What a Sour is (and how they aren’t always sour)

* How to make a basic Sour drink

* How different Sours are related across liquors and ratios

* How to experiment with your Sours

Wise Words:

“Every sweet has its sour; every evil its good.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

“When life gives you lemons, squirt someone in the eye.” ? Cathy Guisewite

“I believe when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade…and try to find someone whose life has given them vodka, and have a party.” ? Ron White

“Sometimes life is sad. You can cry in your booze, if you want. I think that’s called a Whiskey Sour.” ? Jarod Kintz

Gear and Supplies:

Consider a good Shaker an essential for making sours—you’re going to want to really mellow the citrus, and so you’re going to want to shake hard, and for a while.

And if you can’t master the technique of separating an egg yolk from its white, then you might need an egg yolk separator (for a frothier, more full-body cocktail).
