Growing on a soul level is our work in this lifetime and the hero’s journey is like an instruction manual for how to do it well. In the traditional hero’s journey, there is a terrible demon or dragon ravaging the countryside. The hero goes on a quest to save the village. He challenges his own imitations, slays the dragon and brings back the treasure which the beast has stolen. He returns the treasure to the village for the benefit of everyone and becomes a hero.

Through the work of Spiritual Psychology we learn to become our own hero or heroine. Taken as a map for our own inner experience, each aspect of the hero’s journey represents a part of ourselves. The dragon is our presenting problems. The village is our life circumstance. The hero or heroine is us. How is the pandemic calling each of us to grow individually? Is there a collective hero's journey for the world culture, with Covid-19 as the dragon calling us to face our fears and change?
