2021 : When Junk Spirituality Begins To Die - a podcast by Gav

I have been looking at this for a number of years, lightweight spirituality accounts, that are ultimately entertainment. I mean they are empty, vacuous accounts, and should be viewed as such.

Consider not viewing these accounts as empowering you or nurturing you. In reality they give you a dopamine hit, you read the quote or short piece, or listen to the video, it makes you feel good for a few minutes, just enough time until your attention is taken by the next video or account or your phone, and so on.

Later on, what you read or listened to is forgotten, no action has been taken, in no way have you engaged, in no way were you challenged, and thus in no way did you change.

This cycle is an addiction, there is no real investment in it, no real risk and no real reward. But it is a cycle many are stuck in, until they get complete with it and eventually realise this kind of modern disposable affirmation, crystal feelgood spirituality is nothing more than distraction. It is as valuable as the mainstream media, reality television. Yet in a way I have more respect for reality television, with that people know what they are getting and they can be fairly honest with themselves and admit it is mindless. With junk spirituality, which is often just as mindless, but the purveyor and the consumer delude themselves into thinking that the happy quotes or pictures is somehow spiritual work and will benefit them and help change their lives.

If you wish to run a marathon, you're going to have to train, if you wish to get fit you're gonna have to work at it. If you wish to awaken further, you're gonna have to go to places you've never been before, places you have instinctively been aware of but avoided.

This year in my opinion we will see more people realise how empty fluffy populist feel good spirituality is, and begin to step beyond it, into real work.
