Pentecost Sunday

Come, Holy Advocate, come
Come from the Father, for Jesus sends you
Come Spirit of truth, testify on Jesus’ behalf
Come and help us to glorify God, our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer

COLLECT
Almighty God, with wind from heaven and tongues of flame
you poured out your Spirit on the disciples:
set our hearts on fire with joy and power and send us out as witnesses to the wonder of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen


READING: Acts 2: 1-21
When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. 
2 Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 
3 Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. 
4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. 
6 When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages. 
13 But others made fun of the believers, saying, “These people are drunk!”
14 Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means.
15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose; it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
16 Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about:
17 ‘This is what I will do in the last days, God says:
    I will pour out my Spirit on everyone.

GOSPEL ACCORDING TO John 15: 26-27; 16: 4b-15
26 "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.
8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:

9 about sin, because they do not believe in me;

10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer;

11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.



Prayer in the time of COVID

Author of life Saviour of the nations
COVID is humbling, your grace is sufficient.
The deaths, we mourn;
For the recoveries, we give thanks;
The compassionate care, we applaud;
For the vaccines, we are grateful;
For compliance, we plead;
For the common good, we pray;
In the healing name of Jesus. Amen

Blessing
Go out into the world,
and labour to bring forth new life.
Dream dreams, pursue visions
and speak of God’s goodness
in the words of those who would hear.
And may the God who breathed life into creation be your delight.
May Christ Jesus give hope to your dreaming,
and may the Holy Spirit, your advocate and supporter,
set your hearts ablaze with a passion for peace. Amen
