21st Sunday after Pentecost

Theme: Forgiveness is the purpose of salvation

COLLECT
O God, in Christ you seek and save the lost: visit us with the joy of salvation that we may rejoice in the riches of your
forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

READING Habakkuk 1: 1-4; 2: 1-4
2 O Lord, how long must I call for help before you listen, before you save us from violence?
3 Why do you make me see such trouble? How can you stand to look on such wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are all around me, and there is fighting and quarreling everywhere.
4 The law is weak and useless, and justice is never done. Evil people get the better of the righteous, and so justice is perverted.
4 And this is the message: ‘Those who are evil will not survive, those who are righteous will live because they are faithful to God.’”

READING 2 Thessalonians 1: 1-4, 11-12
11 That is why we always pray for you. We ask our God to make you worthy of the life he has called you to live. May he fulfill by his power all your desire for goodness and complete your work of faith.

GOSPEL according to Luke 19: 1-10
5 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today."
6 So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.
7 All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner."
8 Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much."
9 Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."
