22nd Sunday after Pentecost

Theme: Celebration of Ministry within the Family of God’s Church

COLLECT
Almighty God, you are the Lord of the living and the dead:
prepare our hearts and minds that we may be ready to receive Christ’s just and gentle rule; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

READING Haggai 1: 15-2: 9
6 “Before long I will shake heaven and earth, land and sea.
7 I will overthrow all the nations, and their treasures will be brought here, and the Temple will be filled with wealth.
8 All the silver and gold of the world is mine.
9 The new Temple will be more splendid than the old one, and there I will give my people prosperity and peace.” The Lord Almighty has spoken.

READING 2 Thessalonians 2: 1-5, 13-17
13 We must thank God at all times for you, friends, you whom the Lord loves. For God chose you as the first to be saved by the Spirit's power to make you his holy people and by your faith in the truth.
14 God called you to this through the Good News we preached to you; he called you to possess your share of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 So then, our friends, stand firm and hold on to those truths which we taught you, both in our preaching and in our letter.

GOSPEL according to Luke 20: 27-38
27 Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him
28 and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.
29 Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless;
30 then the second
31 and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless.
32 Finally the woman also died.
33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her."
34 Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage;
35 but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
36 Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.
37 And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."

PRAYER for Africa
God, refresh Africa and all the world,
Protect and grow our children.
Convict with justice and truth, all our leaders
And fill all hearts with your peace.
For Jesus Christ sake. Amen.

BENEDICTION & COMMISSIONING/SENDING
Go now with courage, for God is with you.
Do not let anyone deceive you
but hold fast to the traditions of the Apostles
and put your trust in the God of the living.
