November 14, 2001, Evangelist Phyllis Randall (Avi’s Grandmother) donated her kidney to her nephew. In honor of the nineteenth anniversary of that sacrifice Avi Grace sits down with her grandmother to discuss her journey. Phyllis tells the story of how her nephew’s struggle on dialysis. Including how he came to her and asked her for help and her response of “if we’re a match I will give you a kidney”.  Trigger Warning: This conversation talks about medical procedures and personal testimonials of medical events.


Avi Grace also speaks with Beth Hinesley, a Registered Nurse who has worked for Carolina Donor Services nearly twenty-five years. Carolina Donor Services is a non-profit postmortem organ, tissue, and eye donation collection agency based through North Carolina and one county in Virginia. Beth Hinesley, now a coordinator for Carolina Donor Services recounts the events that inspired her interest in work with organ donation.


Beth provides much need information surrounding postmortem organ donation especially as it relates to LGBTQ people, people living with HIV, and Black people. She dispels the myths of not being able to have a open-casket and so much more. Beth also goes into detail about organ donation between HIV positive donors and patients. She believes she has found her calling in life in helping people donate life.
