For State The Avious’ Kwanzaa 2020 Umoja conversation Avi Grace welcomes Empress Rene Couret to the State the Avious microphone. This episode lifts up "Umoja", the first principle of Kwanzaa which means "Unity".  The conversation centers around idea of "being a bridge in community" instead of simply "building" a bridge between the deep divides within community. Rene  is a fair skinned Afro-Latina woman from San Diego, California who has lived and traveled across the continental United States many times. She brings wisdom and perspective from the viewpoint of one who lives within the Black/Brown community by choice and who uses their privileges to call attention to privilege itself.
Empress Rene Couret (she/they/empress) currently lives in North Carolina with her two daughters. She is actively engaged in political and social justice reforms. She is known throughout the community as one who will show up and march/protest/lift up the muted voices in society. Rene has spent her recent years working to provide housing and life essentials to those home displaced in the trans and queer community.
Rene is a Mom, Justice Warrior, Actress, Model, Author of multiple books, and an Interfaith Minister. To learn more about René Couret find her on Facebook at Rene Couret and Instagram @reneintuitive.
