Episode Summary:
In this episode, April speaks with business and marketing strategist Maggie Giele. Maggie relates her experience with burnout, which overcame her 18 months after she started her business. This was a wake-up call that took Maggie almost five months to recover from (following burnout, she would feel severe dizziness after walking for only ten minutes). Maggie attributes her burnout to impatience—frustration from a lack of results after investing almost two years of time, money, and energy into her new business.
Maggie shares her past insecurities and struggles as she navigated the corporate world, seemingly unable to find a job where she would fit in. It was those early challenges that motivated her to become her own boss. However, her insecurities found their way into this new decision in the form of a desire for perfection: Maggie would attend every webinar and download every free report she could get her hands on, and hold off on releasing content for long periods of time. In fact, at one point, she had 55 unpublished blog posts that she just could not bring herself to put out there.
After Maggie experienced burnout, she made it a point to reevaluate how she could change her attitude towards building her business moving forward. She realized that she needed to shift her focus away from quantity (i.e. number of leads) and towards quality (i.e. those few clients that are worth investing time and energy in the most).
When asked for indicators that one may be experiencing burnout, Maggie says that she personally experienced forgetfulness, tiredness, anxiety, and generally feeling unhappy throughout the day. However, she hastens to say that symptoms of burnout vary depending on the person and their individual experiences and stressors. Her best advice is to seek help from a medical professional if you believe you are experiencing early signs of burnout.
