The former British actor Alan Rickman (whom many remember as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movie series) was an avid diarist of all things large and small in his storied life. The book, Madly, Deeply - The Alan Rickman Diaries Review spans 22 years of diaries, beginning in 1993 and ending in December 2015 shortly before his death capturing Rickman at the height of his fame.

This line on page 37 of his book caught my ear: “I hate it when my head, heart and aspirations are filled to the brim only with career. The rest of me hangs around like a jacket on the back of a doorknob.”

Apart from Rickman’s magical imagery, I hear longing for belonging to all parts of his life. Maybe like me you get caught up in the tasks of the professional day and let linger those delights and pleasures that round out a successful life.

Practical Tip: Today is your chance! Think about that part of you that “hangs around like a jacket on the back of a doorknob” and resolve to pick it up, put it on, and explore what else is out there to enjoy with love and lust for life.
