Oftentimes problem solving is not a simple yes or no. Sometimes problems are complex. Sometimes the complexity of the problem is such that you can’t solve it all at once. You have to agree to solve it in parts.  

How often, as leaders, have we struggled to solve a problem all at once only to have it turn out wrong? When we persist in doing the totally right thing when that’s impossible we’re pushing the river. We’re trying to change the course of things by forcing them. We can’t.

I’m thinking of my client now. She wanted everything yesterday. I suggested that problem-solving, like creativity and imagination, is a river inside us. When we get out of our own way the river will flow enabling us to come up with brilliant partial solutions. When it’s impossible to do it all at once we can do the half-right thing in the present moment. How? Invite the flowing river of our problem-solving imagination and creativity to show us the next step.
