Hello to you listening in Portage, Wisconsin!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

A few weeks ago I volunteered in the Ticket Booth at the Haunted Fort fund-raising event in support of our Admiralty Head Lighthouse. An older fellow with a young boy came to the ticket window. The older fellow was wearing a hoodie on the front of which were these words: "Just a regular dad trying to raise a non-liberal son."

Of course there was no opportunity to ask this dad: Tell me more about your hoodie! How did you come to have it? What does it say to you? What do you think it says to others? As my mom would have said, "This place will be a lot quieter when Diane is gone." But I really was curious about the story he might have shared with me.

And what if his views were different from mine? I could practice sitting on my tongue. I could set aside how something different or even distasteful makes me feel in exchange for what I might learn. And, I could agree with myself that I don’t have to agree with him; no, all I have to do is ask questions with the intention to understand another’s story.

Story Prompt: How do you listen out another’s story that is different from your own? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story.
