Hello to you listening on the highways and byways of Washington State!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Life seems to be going at breakneck speed. The more deeply I inhabit Middle Earth Age the more aware I am that life is short and the antidote, paradoxical as it may seem, is to go slow. The slower we go the more we gain. Gain how?

If I had charged ahead instead of slowing down I would have missed picking the first sun-stroked wild blackberries on the path behind the hardware store; plucking the first juicy plum from the branch of a neighbor’s tree over-hanging the sidewalk; two red-tailed hawks carving lazy circles high above me oblivious of the crazy lives we are living here.

If I had charged ahead instead of slowing down I would have missed the bounty of sweet-peas growing in pastel profusion in roadside ditches, and a wide as the horizon view of the Cascades across Honeymoon Bay.

Nor would I have stopped in the park to chat with a grizzled fellow wearing a red bandana head rag hippie-style who delighted in telling me all about his pet, a 2 year old male turkey named Gert, struttin his stuff on the grass, showing off his plumage and colors in hopes of suitably impressing a female. Did you know that turkeys love to be petted and cuddled. They will remember your face and if they like you, they will come up to you to greet you. Turkeys also love music and will cluck along with the songs.

Question: You strike me as a risk-taker, a gambler. What will you gamble on getting when you slow down?
