Hello to you Tracy Heffelfinger listening in Mukilteo, Washington!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey with your host, Diane Wyzga.

Driving off island to La Connor recently and musing as one does I couldn’t help but think of days gone by.

Once upon a time there were no seatbelts in cars. And every day people smashed through windshields, were flung out of doors, parents left without children, children without parents, brides without grooms and so on. But one day someone had a brilliant idea: why not figure out how to keep people inside the car? And so the seatbelt was born. In time people were required by law to use their seatbelt. But because of this folks complained: it would restrict their freedom, wrinkle their clothes, and hurtling through a windshield to make a face-plant in the asphalt was their god-given right. After a lot of stomping around and making furious gestures folks came to value the protection a seatbelt afforded them.

In time COVID masking and vaccination protests will settle down. We will adapt and adjust because that’s what people do when they live together in a civilized society.

Question: How do you see things? How did you arrive at that position?
