Here's a detailed document checklist for students aspiring to study abroad.

The key highlights from podcast are as follows -

  1. Test scorecards: There are three major types of official test scorecards that your need to keep ready. Firstly, aptitude test scorecards and secondly English proficiency test scorecards. Depending on what course you wish to study you will be required to write a GRE or GMAT. However students have a choice to choose between IELTS/ TOEFL basis their judgement as both are universally accepted. Remember to finish these at least 6-8 months before the application process starts.

  2. LOR and SOP: You will need to collect at least 2-4 letters of recommendation from dignitaries in your area of interest. This could be  a university professor, the HOD of your department where you work or even the dean of your college. The Statement of Purpose is drafted by the student herself/himself showcasing the various attributes that you want the university to know about you. Start practicing these at least 5 months before the application deadline.

  3. Financial support proof: These are documents that will show your financial stability. This will primarily entail account details of the one paying for the education., a bank statement and a loan certificate (if applicable).

  4. Transcripts: Get your scores converted into transcripts by the school authorities. Make sure you have at least 5-6 copies of your transcripts ready before you start applying and yes they will have to be hard copies.

  5. Passport: While you may know what a passport is here is what no one will tell you. Make sure you keep it ready at least a year prior to your application process. The process of applying and getting one takes anywhere between a month to three months depending on the local Passport office’s requirements and an array of affidavits you might have to produce.

  6. Offer Letter - Your offer letter is proof to your admit to the university. Along with this remember to carry your I-20 form which is issued by the university. You will need both of these (copies and original) at the VISA office, when you take your flight and for administration purposes once you reach the university.

  7. Visa: This is one of the final steps in terms of documentation. Apply for the VISA two months before you fly out. The process will take around 4-6 weeks to complete. You will be applying for the F1 student visa. Remember to prepare well for the VISA interview and carry essential documents such as passport, VISA bio-metric form, financial documents, university offer letter and I-20 form.
