The latest episode of The Sun Devil Source Report Podcast continues an offseason series that is a little different from our normal podcasts. We are providing our audience with a bit of a treat in the form of interviews that Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman conducted with Arizona State assistant coaches.

The seventh episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU co-defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. The veteran coach, with over 25 years of NFL coaching experience, is in his first year as a full-time coach under head coach Herm Edwards. He joined the program prior to the 2019 season as a special advisor to Sun Devil Devil Football and most recently served as the team's interim defensive backs coach during ASU’s victory over Florida State in the 2019 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

He was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for 16 seasons, the longest tenure of any head coach in franchise history, and holds the franchise record for career wins (131), playoff appearances (seven) and division titles (four).

Lewis and co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce will take over a defense that was led by current New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales over the two seasons.

In this podcast, Lewis gives his thoughts on the defensive personnel he’s inherited and discusses how ASU’s new defensive scheme will be similar to the defenses he led during his NFL career. He also describes what the opportunity to come back and work within college football has been like, alongside his long-time friend, Herm Edwards.
