Gina Jurlando used to joke about the group of women she surfed with calling themselves Yeasty Boys. What was initially a silly way to describe her surf crew, has expanded into a group of surfers of all levels, genders, backgrounds, and towns who want to learn, want to teach, or just want a buddy to paddle out with.

Yeasty Boys was founded in 2021 after learning of how many femme folks were hesitant to learn to surf or paddle out for fear of getting in the way of the male-dominated lineup. Yeasty Boys is a social club with a focus on community service. When they're not in the water, they’re cooking up ways to help out their neighbors and keep our oceans clean.

Our guest today is a founder of the Yeast Boys, Gina Jurlando. She has been surfing for her entire life. She learned to surf when she was about 7 years old, being pushed into waves on a 10ft water logged longboard from the 1970s by her dad. Her whole family are water men and women and she comes from a long line of fishermen, boat captains, and most importantly- surfers!

Gina founded the Yeasty Boys in 2021 when she realized how many other surfers felt the hesitation to paddle out due to a lack of skills or a support system. What started as a joke has turned into an ever-growing group of people who want to help each other grow and progress, no matter what their skill level. She is our guest on this episode of The Swell Season Surf Podcast.
