I had the wonderful fortune to serve as an assistant coach at Bluffton University when Tom Heil was a junior and a senior.  He has since gone on to coach as an assistant at Defiance College (2 years), then Baldwin Wallace University (5 years).  His fateful journey in coaching saw him earn the opportunity to return to Defiance at the age of 29 as the school's head coach.  In his one season leading the Yellow Jackets, the team was 22-7, winning both the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.  They went on to upset reigning national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  After that year, Coach Heil was hired to return to Baldwin Wallace yet again, this time as the head coach.  In 5 seasons at the helm Heil has led these Yellow Jackets to more than 80 wins and another NCAA Tournament.  He has had a truly magical journey in college coaching and has played or worked for some of the most respected coaches in the profession during high school and college.  He has also overcome some truly staggering personal challenges during his time in coaching.  Please enjoy my conversation with Tom Heil of Baldwin Wallace University.
