Psalm 129 is a hymn of sorrow and confidence. The psalmist rehearses the sufferings of Israel in verses one through four and follows with a series of curses against Israel’s enemies in verses five through eight. The idea of cursing one’s enemies is offensive to modern sensitivities. Nevertheless, the P]]osalms are filled with curses or condemnation uttered against one’s enemies. Furthermore, there is no divine censure against these curses. Indeed, God’s Law is based upon a series of blessing and curses. Those who obey are blessed, whereas those who disobey are cursed.Curses or judgments issued against one’s enemies is Biblical. However, believers are also commanded to love their enemies. Indeed, there is a tension between cursing and loving them. The tension is resolved when applying a Biblical worldview. Cursing one’s enemy is placing them under divine censure and judgment. Loving one’s enemy is demonstrating mercy (i.e., withholding personal vengeance) and seeking their highest good (i.e., sharing the Gospel with them).
