Psalm 51 is a psalm of repentance written by David after Nathan the prophet confronted him regarding his sin against Bathsheba and her husband Uriah. David was guilty of a great many sins according to 2 Samuel 11-12. He sinned by staying at Jerusalem when he should have been on the battlefield. He sinned by raping Bathsheba. He sinned by deceiving Uriah, her husband. He sinned by murdering Uriah. One sin led to another sin and another and then another. Like so many, he dug himself deeper and deeper into the pit of sin until finally the Lord confronted him through the prophet Nathan.

Nathan’s confrontation led to David’s confession of his sin and repentance — “I have sinned against the Lord” (2 Samuel 12:13). In response, the prophet declared, “The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die.” David experienced the reality of 1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Psalm 51 is David’s response to his sin and God’s forgiveness. As well, it is a pattern for how we should repent when we sin and seek God’s cleansing power.
