When Jesus says, “You have heard…it was said… but I say to you,” He is not contradicting the Law but correcting the Pharisaical distortions. As such, Jesus’ first correction regards their interpretation of the sixth commandment prohibiting murder. Jesus explains that while the letter of the law prohibits murder, the spirit of the law prohibits hate and anger. As such, Jesus sets forth an excursus upon hate, anger, and the Kingdom Citizen.
