In Matthew 9:9-17 Jesus’ authority to forgive to sin shifts to the publican. The publican in question is Matthew. While many would not consider his conversion miraculous like the healing of the paralytic, Matthew nevertheless views it as miraculous because his soul was delivered from the kingdom of darkness. In the paralytic narrative, Jesus’ authority to forgive sins produces spiritual healing, proven by physical healing, and produces reverential praise. Now in the publican narrative, His authority to forgive produces disciples, is proven by three arguments, and portrayed by three illustrations.
