In Matthew 9, Jesus demonstrates His authority to forgive sins. That the Messiah would forgive sins is foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures. According to Isaiah 33:24, when the Messiah comes, “The people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity.” In Isaiah 40:2, Messiah will come and proclaim, “His iniquity has been removed.”
In verses one through eight, of Matthew 9, Jesus’ authority to forgive sins is demonstrated by the healing of the paralytic man. Then, in verses nine through seventeen, His authority to forgive is demonstrated with the salvation of the publican. In the conversion of the publican, Matthew himself takes center stage. Though his conversion is not miraculous like the healing of a person with paralysis, Matthew nevertheless views it as miraculous because his soul was delivered from the kingdom of darkness. Before examining more on Matthew’s salvation, Jesus’ authority to forgive is demonstrated first in the healing of the paralytic in Matthew 9:1-8.
