Interestingly, the issue of the spirit verse the letter of the Law comes into play in Matthew 12:9-14. This narrative portion is part of the larger pericope establishing Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath. In verses one and two, the Pharisees questioned the Lord’s Sabbath authority. Then in verses three through eight, the Lord’s Sabbath authority was established. In verses nine through fourteen, the Lord’s Sabbath authority is proven. Using the spirit of the Law, Jesus proves His Sabbath authority by healing a man’s withered hand.
