During COVID-19, there were numerous discussions in English across India and the world on the nature of the virus, the pandemic, the research that goes into the development of vaccines and drugs, and a lot more. Governments, scientists, and public bodies were also at the forefront of this. But what about in Kannada and other Indian languages spoken by crores of people? Most public communication was reduced to PSAs or Public Service Announcements, and do’s and don’ts. COVID-19 is just one example, in general, science and research communication remains largely in English in India.

Kollegala Sharma’s various efforts are a prominent exception -- and as a science communicator, he has championed the sharing of good science explanations, research developments and more, in Kannada. A retired scientist living in Mysore, Mr Sharma is the creator of the Janasuddi Podcast (jaaNa-suddi) -- an daily audio magazine in Kannada featuring a feast of scientific knowledge, in a manner accessible to all Kannadigas. He is also a prominent force behind the Kannada science magazine Kutuhali, published by the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) with support from Vigyan Prasar, Government of India.

On Episode 118 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, Kollegala Sharma talks to host Pavan Srinath to share his journey with creating Janasuddi as a daily science Kannada podcast, and also shares how good science communication can be readily achieved in Kannada and any other language.
