In this episode, Ganesh shares what makes role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons special, how it creates a ‘theatre of the mind’, and how players don’t just play a board game, but can sit around a table and create a rich story and a rich universe together. Ganesh explains how D&D combines both probability because of the use of complex dice, a Game or Dungeon Master’s imagination of a world, and the real choices of players who inhabit the role of their characters. Ganesh and Pavan discuss how D&D can be complex and requires an informed Game Master or Dungeon Master, but also involves a detailed system that enables players to fight battles turn-by-turn and mix magic, action, mayhem, drama and humour into a rich experience.

Pavan also shares how in the last 5-10 years, “Actual Play D&D” has become a popular video, podcast and video streaming entertainment option. Talented actors, artists and comedians play real D&D games set in vibrant different universes, and these are watched by millions of people. Not just that, but some of these stories have also now been adapted into comic books, animated TV series and more.
