The 8BA Podcast is a casual talk show where we discuss geeky pop culture and relay some of our favorite news of the past week.

QUICKFIRE NEWS

Nintendo. Nintendo is closing its Redwood and Toronto offices, which are primarily involved in sales and marketing, and moving most of the positions to its respective HQs in Canada and the US. About 100 employees are reported to be displaced from the Redwood office.

Activision Blizzard. No BlizzCon for 2022, Kotick will take a massive pay cut until the board feels certain “diversity, equity, and inclusion goals are met,” though shareholders approved a $155M pay package earlier this year. WoW will also have a Community Council, which will be composed of community applicants (selected by Blizzard) to deliver feedback and thoughts on behalf of the community to inform game development. Blizzard Co-lead Jen O’Neal and Tech Lead Amy Dunham are leaving the company.

Meta. Facebook rebrands its parent company to Meta. Zuckerberg wants to push VR as a social space and an interconnection of networks (like the OASIS in Ready Player One).

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Paradise. The paid DLC will be ACNH’s only paid DLC, and final content update. However, the game will still be updated with “small changes.”

New World. An HTML exploit in the game’s chat let players place images and kick other players from the game. It also let you duplicate gold, prompting Amazon to shut down all currency transfer services, such as the game’s version of the auction house. This led to another gold exploit.

Ubisoft. The company will plan to integrate blockchain technology and NFTs into future games.
