Get it?  Briefer?  Hilarious, Dr. Hawking.  To talk about this book, I need to first talk about the original,A Brief History of Time, which I first read around 1995.  That was when I first started getting into books, first started reading books that I wanted to instead of just those that were assigned.  I remember being blown away by the ideas in the book; I reread it several times, trying to get a better understanding of the concepts.

Fast-forward 13 years.  A Briefer History of Time, which I believe was released about three years ago, goes over some of the same ideas from the first book and expands upon newer ideas, especially black holes.  It's updated with snazzy pictures of Dr. Hawking in various situations to illustrate points, but the extra gloss can't cover up the book's real lack of selling points for someone who's read the original.  Yes, it's good, but I've read the original, and I've read other books on the same topics, so there wasn't much that was new for me.  So, my advice is if you've never read the original, pick up this version.  If you have read the original, check out Simon Singh'sBig Bangand Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe; Singh's book is more thorough on the history of our current scientific ideas, and Greene's book will catch you up on string theory.
