I'm about halfway through David McCullough'sThe Path Between the Seas, a book about the creation of the Panama Canal. Before I started reading, I knew almost nothing about the Panama Canal, other than that it's a canal and it's in...wait for it...Panama. I had no idea that the French started the canal, nor did I know that at the time Panama was part of Colombia. I really like reading about the late 1800's/early 1900's. McCullough's book about young Theodore Roosevelt and his book about the creation of the Brooklyn Bridge were both excellent, and it's interesting to catch up with Roosevelt as an adult as he gets involved with the canal. Some of the people I read about in the Brooklyn Bridge book turn up in the canal book, which is interesting, too.
