In 2020, the death of George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin, captured on video in Minneapolis, galvanized people all around the world to take to the streets in protest, even as the COVID-19 pandemic raged. Though Black Lives Matter had existed since 2013, Floyd's death led to a deeper awareness of systemic racism and serious conversations about defunding police. Less than two weeks after Floyd's death, we discussed solutions for how to end anti-Black racism and systemic discrimination. Then, Northeastern Ontario Hub journalist Nick Dunne recounts that region's involvement in the War of 1812.
