Chris has hastily packed up the rest of his things to move into Ambridge View, and Susan can see how exhausted and stressed he is. Chris admits that leaving Alice was the only option – her drinking and behaviour at the christening made that clear.
Chris becomes emotional with his parents, admitting he still loves Alice and how hard it’ll be to never go back. He’s constantly worrying about Martha. Neil and Susan reassure Chris, they’ll help with feeding at night-time and weekends – it’s such a relief to stressed Chris, who’s worried about slipping up with his business.
Neil warns Susan not to wear herself out – can they really cope with a new-born? Susan persuades Neil that they need to keep up an organised front for Chris.
Jennifer’s desperate to phone Susan, but Brian advises giving Chris and Alice space. Brian tries to distract Jenny with a walk, but she’s so concerned about the village knowing Alice is an alcoholic. As they reflect on how they’ve judged Alice and Chris in the past, Brian points out what a strong woman Alice is, playing down her alcoholism, and persuades Jennifer not to interfere, even cheering her up with his reassuring words.
Alice phones Brian, who reassures Alice he and Jennifer will keep their distance until she wants visitors. Alice plays down the situation, and Brian encourages total honesty between her and Chris. He recalls his own painful past experience of confessing his actions to Jennifer. Alice says she will be totally honest.
