Helen tells Kirsty that she and Lee hope to be moved into Beechwood by the end of next week but that it will be a while before they’re totally straight. Helen’s going to be busy in the dairy now that they’ve agreed to give Susan some time off to help with Martha. Helen’s surprised when Kirsty offers to work part time to help ease the staffing situation. Kirsty’s confused when Helen presents reasons why Kirsty may not be suitable and challenges her. It transpires that Helen doesn’t want to exploit their friendship. Kirsty convinces Helen that she would be doing her a favour; she’s twiddling her thumbs at Grey Gables. A delighted Helen asks Kirsty when she can start.
Alice has already been drinking when she asks Jim in the shop to sell her a bottle of vodka. Jim tries to reason with Alice; perhaps vodka isn’t what she needs. Alice manipulates Jim – if he won’t serve her, she’ll drive somewhere that will. Realising this could be more harmful Jim reluctantly passes Alice the vodka. Susan arrives demanding an explanation. Both Alice and Jim give their sides of the story. Susan will not serve Alice and suggests that Jim mind his own business. Susan attempts calmly to explain the rules but as things get more heated she asks Alice to leave. Susan’s shaken by the exchange and apologises to Jim for what she said to him. As Jim tries to comfort a tearful Susan, there's a sickening smash of glass.
