“Part One | Slavery & Attachment”

How attachments to our beliefs can make us a slave to our experience.

A couple of months back my housemate and I moved in my little Cockatoo from our old house to our new house.

I had had visions of our new home being a place of peace, of tranquility, and of inspiration and I was really excited to have my Cockatoo back with me to share a more tranquil home with me.

But I found that in moving her in, she experienced huge anxiety, she would often scream, and I begun to see how stressed, anxious, and frustrated I would feel that nothing I would do would be able to sooth her or calm her down.

I begun to witness myself thinking that with her in our house I would never experience peace, I wouldn’t have space to create (which is so vital and important to me feeling healthy and myself), and perhaps it would take a very long time for her to settle.

On one particularly anxious day, the idea for this podcast appeared in my mind, “Slavery & Attachment.”

The feeling I got was of intrigue: could I be carrying our history of slavery around with me, in my energy, in my way of thinking and could I be contributing to this situation myself?

Over the next few months I received insights that would change the way I viewed the idea of slavery, that slavery is an attitude: a belief and a set of beliefs conditioned into us that we are controlled by an outcome.

It is a belief - that everyone else’s experience controls and conditions our own.

I came to learn that it is all about perspective - it is a choice of how to see the situation and in life it’s just whether you feel controlled or not.

As with my stepping out of Psychosis, I faced this new challenge in a similar way, though I didn’t feel I had the answers at the time, I just asked, and step by step I was met with new insights, ideas, solutions, and ways of moving forward.

I saw that I was holding myself back from my true inner sense of peace by 'expecting' and 'needing' peace to look like a certain thing on the outside.

This episode is part of a 3 Part Series:

'Episode 1: Slavery & Attachment' which explores how we become a slave to our beliefs, our thoughts, our patterns, and our histories

'Episode 2: Teaching' explores how in healing ourselves and truly enlightening ourselves, we have the space to support and enlighten others

and

'Episode 3: Stories and Storytelling' is all about the stories we tell ourselves and how they dictate our sense or feeling of freedom

No matter the circumstance we may find ourselves in, our movement forward, our resolutions are all about the stories we tell ourselves, and this series shares how we can move beyond our stories of slavery into stories of freedom - stories which allow us to inhabit the highest form of ourselves.

In just the past few weeks I had the feeling come to me that I was interested in story-telling and becoming an artist because I was interested in evolving our society: artists and story-tellers invite us to see this world from a whole other perspective, a whole new story.

I look forward to joining you in this episode to take a look at a whole new perspective on Slavery & Attachment.
