Rebroadcast of the long-running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour,"  a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org

Roman Catholic missionaries to China first arrived from Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. They had little success in establishing the Church in the predominantly Buddhist nation. Missionaries in the 1930’s encountered fierce opposition from the political parties and warlords who fought with each other for power. Northern Tibet was forbidden to westerners, and priests were tortured and killed for traveling to the region.

Despite the constant threat of death, Father Nussbaum strongly felt the spirit of God in the harsh mountainous environment and he faithfully set about planting the seeds of Christianity. He established a rescue post in the Tibetan mountains, where he lived simply and peacefully brought the Gospel of Christ to all who wished to receive it. Father Nussbaum converted hundreds of people to Christianity and, for this, he was martyred by a brutal warlord in 1941.
