Surplus stores, electronic mail-order supply houses of the past, and correspondence schools are the topics on this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site. Mike Z shares his memories of growing up in New York and visiting the shops on Canal Street in lower Manhattan. He describes some of the neat items one could find back in these stores back in the day. Mike B shares his experiences going to the shops on York Boulevard in Highland Park, near Los Angeles, and seeing a lot of the same type items that were to be found on the East Coast. And Smitty remembers a New York-style surplus store that used to be in downtown San Diego. In addition, we recall the great electronics mail order parts houses of the past. Such companies as Allied, Lafayette, and Newark Electronics are mentioned. Additionally, we talk about some of the correspondence schools from that time period such as CREI, Coyne, and Commercial Trades Institute. Smitty has a list of notable passings from late 2011 in the obituary report. Also, we listen to Lesley Gore's hit from 1963 "It's My Party". Our Retro-Commercial is for Chevrolet Station Wagons of the 1970s. Join the fun on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site!
