Swapping Sweat Pants for Suits!

Sbu Mjikeliso sat down with Bryan Habana for Forbes Africa Magazine to discuss the former Bok great's future business plans now that he has retired.

Habana recently teamed up with Ben Karpinski, Mike Sharman and Shaka Sisulu to for RetroActive, a sports digital marketing company that has already taken the market by storm.

The fact that the company is already profitable in less than six months of existence – boasting a clientele that includes Cricket SA, Jawitz Properties and Biogen – already tells you that they have begun on the front foot.

This is not your ordinary Bobescast interview. Sbu and Bryan delve into the often uncomfortable side of being an athlete: money, saving, investing, planning and letting go of the jersey.

Bryan Habana says: “I didn’t know it was going to be my last year but I had already started studying at the Toulouse Business School, doing a basic Business Unit Manager course, trying to get and idea of the business world. I learnt about its various different subjects such as accountancy, marketing, digital marketing, strategy and a very basic introduction into law principles.

“It’s easy to put goals in place from a rugby perspective. But in business, the biggest North Star is to try find my feet in this world. Everyone wants to be successful but that’s measured by what each person sees as success. I don’t have a rand value for success.

“During my career, from a financial point of view, there were certain things I wanted to achieve by the time it ended: having a paid off house, paid off car and having investments in companies, stock or bonds."
