Game of the Show: Persona 5 Strikers

Published by Omega Force and P-Studio, MSRP $60, Buy on Humble (Partner Link)

Strikers is a spin-off for Person 5, a direct story sequel with completely different gameplay, developed by the studio behind the Dynasty Warriors series that also created Hyrule Warriors, the same spin-off for The Legends of Zelda.

The main gameplay, instead of being a serious JRPG, is a massive combat brawler where you need to utilise the different character fighting styles and Persona to defeat all enemies. Unlike the original Persona 5 where the character fighting style was not emphasized, the developers took care to give each of the 9 characters it’s own playstyle. Players playing on normal or hard difficulties will probably spend many hours learning those move sets, while I’m playing on easy and mainly using Joker and his many different persona to hit enemy weaknesses.

The main draw for Persona 5 fans are the characters and a new story following the basic premise of the original. Besides that, Strikers does not offer time management or much of a relationship-building mechanics. You travel with your friends from city to city, fight hordes of enemies in the metaverse, and have some anime cutscenes to tie everything together.

I’m about 30 hours into the game and I should be getting to the final act, placing the game’s length for easy difficulty at around 35-40 hours. It’s not an amazing value for $60, so if you’re not a Persona fan you will probably want to wait for a discount. But actually, you don’t want to play Strikers if you haven’t finished Persona 5 already.
