Christ is the light that shines in darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it!

– John

Isaiah 9:2 NLT

The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.

One of the most debilitating forces hindering movement is darkness. Darkness hinders understanding and comprehension of what to do next. In the darkness, the eye will begin to search for and draw in the faintest glimmer of light. As the eye collects light, the mind can start to process current circumstances and provide much-needed information about how to begin moving again.  The darkness can be physical hindering physical movement. Darkness can be spiritual, emotional, or intellectual hindering understanding about how to process condition and begin an assessment of the next steps internally.

The introduction of even the smallest amount of light into any dark situation begins to bring clarity and easily allows beings to understand and take the next steps. The bible echo's this reasoning on a spiritual level when it declares that the entrance of God's word brings light and gives understanding to the simple. This thought and logic is the root of this messianic prophecy. Isaiah speaking to the nation of Israel, addresses the tendency of many to turn away from God's word and, in doing so, find themselves in the despair of darkness. They are angry at God and king, and nothing they try brings relief. It is into this situation the prophet declares Messiah will come. Advent brings light that makes progress possible again.

For today's devotion, think about the areas of your life where you lack understanding regarding what to do next. Consider the frustrations that come as a result of this lack of understanding. Next consider the possibility that you are walking in some type of darkness and need light. My prayer is that you would allow this devotion to remind you of the promised light of Advent. Open your heart to God's word to you and allow His word to bring light that will yield the understanding you need to take the next steps in your life.
