“You are not what others think you are. You are what God knows you are.”
― Shannon Alder

We all grow up hearing a variety of harmful things throughout our lives that shape our struggles with how we live. Comments like I’m so disappointed, ashamed, embarrassed, saddened, upset and hurt by you and what you did are common phrases we hear from childhood. People add to these comments that everyone else is going to let feel let down or disappointed as well, only adding more weight to our struggle. And then the best one that I have heard is… You’re not who I thought you were. That last one would have destroyed me had I not fully know the truth about life. That truth is we all struggle with the human condition… not just our flesh, but also our feebleness, mortality, the randomness of life, things that don’t make sense and of course the many why’s we face throughout our lifetime. Therefore, I believe so strongly in faith. Faith is the belief that something or someone is more significant than me. Faith is a belief that there is order, there is hope, I can survive, I will overcome and are all things that I believe inspire humanity to endure and rise above impossible circumstances and find and live their best possible life.

ENTER Religion.  With religiosity all these questions are magnified, the guilt is compounded, and we hear all the voices screaming their disappointment and disagreement in our heads. It is almost overwhelming! But if we are going to bring God into the equation regarding what is said about our persons, then we certainly should not merely rely upon the words of those who say they speak for God, but we should trust the Word of God and Spirit of God that is promised to lead us and guide us in truth.

For my Easter message this year (accessible through this web page and on Facebook), I looked at five things the word says about us because of what Jesus did with his life, death, and resurrection.  Check back on Tuesday for An Easter Blog – Part 2 that looks at the first 3 of 5 things the word says about you and me. These truths are an essential defense against the human struggle with feelings of insufficiency and unworthiness, and these points will give you the confidence to live your best life and know it is enough.
