If you want to find God, hang out in the space between your thoughts.

– Alan Cohen

The scripture verse associated with the thought be still and know refers to being still and knowing that there is a God. Acknowledgment that there is a God quietens all other voices and allow you to begin to determine the voices of others from the voice inside of you. Dependency is needing others to the determent of your own being. Though we should be there for our family, friends, and community at large, and we would hope others would be there for us, we must never get to the point that we replace God with others. Whether others are people or things, anything allowed to exist on the level of God in our lives outside of God is idolatry.  When we put others in place of God, we extinguish the direction and life that comes from God alone, and we end up enslaved mentally and emotionally to the whims and desire of others. We can never honestly know ourselves and indeed find our authentic life until we quieten all the competitors to God. Those who assert themselves as an authority in our lives or those we have come to be dependent upon, we must be still and know in ourselves that we have everything we need to be successful and find our path. At the end of it all, faith in God, causes us to believe in ourselves and makes us less vulnerable to the tyranny of others.
