“Uniqueness lies in not comparing oneself to others.”
― Raheel Farooq

In the history of the Hebrew nation, there is an account where they were told to go in and possess some land. They chose to spy out the area first. On their trip through the country, they saw the beauty and the plenteous supply of natural resources and were overwhelmed by its potential. But, instead of moving in belief and possessing the land they stopped in fear because of the inhabitants already in the area. Their report to the leaders and other Hebrew people was the land is excellent, but “We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them, we felt like grasshoppers, and that's what they thought, too!" Exodus 13:33.

When we compare ourselves to others, we must surmise, guess or assume what the ones we are comparing ourselves to are thinking about us. When we live unaware of our own uniqueness, we project onto and assign to others what we believe about ourselves. Projecting a negative view of yourself onto others, we are defeated before we even fight. Instead of projecting onto others our negative views regarding our self, we should begin to develop the potential inside of ourselves fully. When we have a sure word, notion or thought regarding our path, we should walk it out without factoring in contrast with others.

“Stop thinking you’re doing it all wrong. Your path doesn’t look like anybody else’s because it can’t, it shouldn’t, and it won’t.”

― Eleanor Brownn

I am not talking about feeling superior to everyone else, and though the application to our lives is not typically one of fight or force against an enemy, it is a struggle against the false sense of competition we find in our everyday lives that comes because of comparison. There is a great freedom that happens when we cease comparison and competition and learn to fully develop the talents and abilities entrusted to our lives by our creator.

“There is no need for comparison. Be happy with yourself and find satisfaction in your work.”

― Lailah Gifty Akita, Think Great: Be Great!

When we learn to be content with just being who we are, we find ourselves free to excel in our lives.
