“Better to get hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.”
― Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner

I realize this title is odd title for a blog that is focusing on our finding an authentic life, but I wanted to get the attention of many who may never look at these blogs. For the most part, people and especially religious people seek out those who will tell us what we want to hear, promise us irrational solutions and continue to help us to avoid facing reality.

Though it seems apparent that we should want to face reality, the truth is we don’t. We live past our means using credit that has delayed payments not fully embracing the fact that once the payments become due we are still going to have needs that will necessitate even further delayed payments to survive until something else comes along. Peck in “The Road Less Traveled” presses this issue of dedication to reality.

Young people rush to marry and have children never thinking through the consequences of those decisions on their lives. We make commitments to things out of pressure and yielding to the lies of marketing promising that if we walk this path or move to this state, or take this vacation, or buy this home or RV that life is going to be much more comfortable. The truth is life is hard. The path through our lives is filled with struggles, and the road will take many unexpected turns and changes along the way. Rather than avoiding this truth we should begin avoiding those that lie to us and try and convince us they have an easy plan or cure and fully expect to have to work hard and honestly address hard issues throughout our lives.

There is a freedom that comes as we do this that is empowering. As we trust in the Spirit of God and believe that he has equipped us to face our paths, our lives are filled with a sense of purpose, power and resolve that causes us to declare as Paul did, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13) Again in 2 Timothy 1:7 Paul reminds us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. With that approach, we can quietly and confidently walk through our lives. We can be confident that nothing will sperate us from God’s love and because of that one fact alone, we can overcome the sins we commit, the opposition of others, and our personal limitations. We can find solutions when it seems the entire world is rooting for us to fail. We can confidently walk through life, dedicated to reality and never being afraid of the truth of our circumstances.

For those approaching life this way, it matters not if hundreds are for you and or thousands against you. It matters not if you are walking in victory, or in a state of constant personal struggle. It matters not what people say about you that are lies or what horrific thing is exposed you tried to cover. When you fully confront the truth of who you are and what the opposing forces against you are, that commitment to reality alone will let you plot a path that will ensure you live an authentic life. You may not win the praise of others, and those you have spent your life trying to empress may not even speak to you, but you will rise each day with peace in your heart, joy in your life and confidence in your spirit that will allow you face any obstacle. This is how you live an entirely authentic life.
