“You never go away from us, yet we have difficulty in returning to You. Come, Lord, stir us up and call us back. Kindle and seize us. Be our fire and our sweetness. Let us love. Let us run.”Augustine of Hippo

In the story of King David moving past a particularly traumatic time is his life, the second very noticeable step that David made was to worship God. David first bathed himself, and then he went as before to his place of worship. The intriguing thing about this is David could have been angry at God for allowing the boy to die. David could have felt condemned as the prophet of God had been the one who brought rebuke regarding David’s behavior. But David’s attitude, as reflected in his writings, had always been one of regardless of my life circumstances, I will always seek the Lord.

Too many times even as Christians, we ignore the preponderance of scripture that teaches that in every situation and circumstance, we ought to worship God. From the beginning of recorded interaction between man and God, God has always made way for his creation to come before him. When Adam and Eve discovered their nakedness, they felt shame and attempted to hide from God. But God made covering for them, that they might be able to come before him.   Even in the most grievous circumstances, man is encouraged to seek the comfort of the relationship with God. In Psalms 107, commonly attributed to David, the writer relays four prevailing difficult circumstances we find ourselves in. These circumstances are when we are lost, when we are in despair, when we are foolish and rebellious, and when we are just discouraged from the strain of life. In each circumstance, David reminds the reader to cry out to the Lord and encourages all to remember that God will deliver anyone from their despair.

Worship is never about the worthiness of the worshiper to worship, it is about the worthiness of the one being worshiped. We should worship every day, but the next time you are feeling overwhelmed. The next time the voices of doubt and condemnation are screaming at you to give up and run away, or you are you feel yourself falling into despair, remember David. David was a flawed and weak human as we all are, but he never drew back from worship, which is recognition of the greatness of God.

Just Be

David
