David Mayer is the CEO of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, one of the newest members of the Charity Miles family.

He's also the Executive Director of the MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety.

In these capacities, he's on a mission to eliminate the amount of preventable deaths in hospitals.

When we began our partnership with the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, I was taken aback to learn that medical errors in hospitals are the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer.

Globally it is believed that medical errors kill more people than HIV, Malaria, and Tuberculosis, combined.

This is staggering.

As we learn from David, our medical workers are all smart, capable and trying their best.

But they're being sent to battle without the right armor and ammunition; and without the right systems and processes to ensure everyone's safety.

Of course, this is even more evident now in the light of COVID-19, which has caused us all to rethink how we need to adequately prepare our medical system.

The other thing that strikes me about PSMF's mission is how it spans causes.  If you care about cancer, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's heart disease, diabetes...  if you've ever been in a hospital-- for yourself or a loved one-- you need to care about this.

We need to learn the lessons that COVID is trying to teach us and prepare our medical system adequately-- not just for the next pandemic, but for all of our safety.

Huge thanks to David for sharing all of this with us.
