Megan talks today with Laraine Gaunt from It's Ok to be Different. While her children were in elementary school, Laraine was concerned children wouldn't learn to engage with children with disabilities. That concern sparked conversations and those conversations grew into a collaborative curriculum to teach empathy and respect at the elementary school level that is continuing to grow 38 years later!

With the encouragement of school administrators and parents, Laraine continued developing the curriculum to include age appropriate topics ranging form preschool up to 8th grade. The curriculum begins with literature, moves to hands on activities to help learn what that difference feels like in daily life, and culminates with a speaker living with that disability or difference who highlights all the things they CAN do.

This springing conversation will leave you wanting to engage with kids in your life around these tricky topics and not be scared to start new conversations. Laraine makes this sound manageable and gives practical, easy tips to get you started.
