Psychologist, Dr. Rachel Barbanel-Fried (Dr. RBF) helps us kick off our series on perinatal mental health.
In this episode I talk with Dr. RBF about the spectrum of issues that can often arise over the course of
growing a family. One of the objectives in this Family Brain series is to increase communication around
the challenges that women and their partners may face through the process of pregnancy as well as pre-
nataland post-natal pregnancy. (Perinatal is a term that covers all of these time frames. If you have
never heard this term, you are not alone. I just learned that word too.)
We discuss post-partum depression, as well as post-partum anxiety and explore ways that families can
prepare to care for themselves in advance of some of the many changes that come with bringing a child
into the world. Dr. RBF suggests resources that may be available to families like lactation consultants
and birth and post-partum doulas. Additionally, we talk about ways that families can help build a village
to help them during this major life transition. I found a great free resource online from
healthymamahacks.net to help prepare a postnatal plan. I so very wish I had done something like this
when I was preparing to welcome my children to the world. Check it out here
