Derek Avilez is a 42 year old firefighter who was born and raised in South Florida. He graduated from Dade Christian High School and received his bachelors from Liberty University, where he played four years as a scholarship athlete for the soccer team. After college, he was selected to play professional soccer in North Carolina where he played two years before breaking his leg and ending his career. God was not done with his story yet as he moved back home and became a firefighter paramedic for the city of Hollywood. This was when all of his past experiences would come full circle as he was about to go through a trial he would have never thought possible. Derek is married to his wife Priscilla and they have three children—Deren (17), Dylan (14) and Katia (12).
