In the early months of the lockdown, regular news reporting was largely restricted to government announcements. With print practically unavailable, there was a deafening silence in terms of meaningful journalism in those initial months. In this episode, Karthik speaks to Barkha Dutt about how she reinvented the reportage around the pandemic by taking to the road, traveling more than 14000 Kilometres across the country, and meeting the real people on the road. They discuss the logistical challenges of doing this as a woman reporter, how local governance panned out in India, and some of the human stories that she encountered, which stayed with her. They also discuss the future of news especially the relevance of podcasts in journalism and why she chose a more in-stream strategy for The Mojo Story as against a web destination. Barkha and Karthik also talk about the journalists and news models that she admires outside her own organization.
