In Episode 04 of The Flip Chronicles, we catch up with true pioneer in Hip-Hop, DJ Kuttin Kandi. Growing up in Queens NYC, young Candice Custodio-Tan thought she’d follow her parents’ dream of becoming a nurse, a pianist, a ballet dancer...but those dreams were interrupted by a new thing happening in the next burrogh over in the Bronx, a movement we all now know as Hip-Hop. Later in the 1990’s she grew to fame in her DJ crew, Fifth Platoon, competing in major turntable battles throughout the country and eventually finding her way into touring as the DJ for artists MC Lyte, The Roots, LL Cool J, Jay-Z and many others. She shares her stories of how it was to be a Pinay coming up in that mostly male scene and leading the way for the many Pinoy/Pinay artists in Hip-Hop today. These days, Kuttin Kandi is focusing her drive on social justice issues, non-profit work and empowerment for minority issues affecting us all in the current political climate.
