The winter of the 2005/06 season was very much one of discontent on Teeside, with Middlesbrough having gone two months and nine matches without a Premier League win either side of New Year’s Day. But five months in 2006 altered the trajectory of that season forever, Steve McLaren’s cosmopolitan squad turning a season that looked like it was crashing towards disaster into one that will live forever in the history of the club.
